I have a Cayuga duck, and her first eggs had a blackish, tarry coating. I washed it off, and the eggs seemed fine. It has been a few weeks, and the coating is all but non-existent. Is this normal?

YES! Some panic when they see the first few black eggs and others are disappointed when the eggs get lighter and lighter. She may do the same on her next laying cycle.

so, as long as she keeps laying, the eggs will just be green with no coating.
Huh, we knew about the coating, just did not realize it wouldn't last forever!
Thank you for the reply! I love this site!!! It is a weekly part of our kids education!
