Ok, I'm a newbie to all this chicken stuff...even though I was raised with them

. I just found this forum yesterday and am loving it. Building a coop this week and need a little advice. I've read on here that cedar SHAVINGS are not particularly good for the chickens...I get that. My question is...we were considering using reclaimed cedar lumber for the floor of the hen house....this SHOULD be okay correct?? Any help in this matter (and ASAP) is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

I would think no because it is the oils in the wood that is bad for them. However the one major thing that I've learned from here is that the best option for floor is to cover it with linolium! Easy clean up and getting a scrap of it is usually pretty cheep! If you covered the floor with linolium then it wouldn't mater what the base was made of.

Cedar is bad and I don't recommend it used at all. Even under linoleum. I wouldn't take the chance. I could still effect their respiratory systems. Good luck with your new chicken endeavor. This forum is awesome.

Cedar lumber is fine to use. Reclaimed cedar would be even better. It's the large surface area of shavings and chips that allows the emission of phenol vapors, which could possibly cause respritory problems. Some people use cedar chips/shavings anyway, with no problem.
