I'm not 100% certain, but I split some old lumber to make my next quail cage, and I think it might be cedar. I have heard that you shouldn't use cedar shavings as bedding. Does the same go for a thick solid structure?

Solid cedar timber is fine.

I could smell a hint of something, which led me to believe it's cedar. I'm not sure if there is another aromatic wood that it could be attributed to...It depends on how old it is. If you can smell the cedar, don't use it.

Somebody came over and didn't think the lumber was actually cedar. I think I'm going to wing it (pun intended).I used cedar lumber for my first coop and it didn’t kill any of my birds.
