What is the verdict: ok to build a coop out of cedar?

I would say no. Who knows, the birds may be fine as long as they don't ingest the wood, but I would err on the side of caution and build it out of some other wood.

There are oils in cedar that are toxic to chickens, just the fumes can damage their respiratory systems.

What's wrong with building the supports and siding out of cedar and then cover the walls inside with something else? My hens are in a run where 2 sides are cedar fencing and they are doing fine. Although, the cedar fence has been in place for a few years so that typical cedar odor is pretty much gone.
