Last year we got some chicks from TSC because they were just too darn cute. 6 rhode island reds, 1 amber star and 6 barred rocks... or something of the sort
1 rir and 1 br died when we move them out into our coop which we hastily built when they started trying to get out of the box in the house. I manged to get 7 hens of the remaining 9, though we had to eat the br roosters, they started chasing and beating up my kids. We originally thought we'd keep them in the coop and run we'd built, but my mom had been letting hers out - so we decided to try that. They are now all free range.
Of those original, it looks like we only have 1 rir left. A couple months ago we got 8 red stars and 2 black stars from a fellow with too many hens. Over the summer, 2 creamy banty looking hens showed up at our house and decided they liked it here. We also have a red banty looking girl that showed up at my mom's house, an EE and a something or other rooster. One of the creamy ladies got broody last month and ended up with 15 eggs that are staggered because I didn't think that one through
She is now down to 4 eggs. We've been bringing the babies inside as they hatched so she wouldn't abandon the rest. They should be done this weekend and I hope to give her back at least 1 so she's raising 3. The silly lady let our EE lay there erratically, so 8 of the eggs were EE crosses. And I hadn't marked them when I realized what happened, so the last 2 were laid after the original 15. I plan to be much wiser next time.
This is entirely too much fun. I just ordered an incubator, having got a dozen cochin eggs yesterday from a guy down the road. The more I read, the more I want to raise chicks and sell them and eggs. Anybody in Central KY have an EE rooster/cockrel they would part with?
