Well, we have started preparing for the chicks next month...

I am getting 6 chickens and am looking at a chain link dog fence. The enclosure is 7.5' X 7.5'... Since I will most likely let them free range a few days a week, is this an ok size? Plus... I would like to be able to have up to 8 chickens...

Thanks for your help!

The open floor space seems to meet the need of 10 square feet per bird in a run. Chain link won't keep a predator from reaching through the mesh to grab a bird. An apron of wire around the perimeter will keep the predators from digging under.

Chris...

Thanks so much for your help! I am aware that I would have to cover the pen and dig a bit of a trench for it, but I am ready to get started!!!
Thanks again!

I use a 10x10 dog run for my six girls and it works great. I had to surround the bottom couple feet with chicken wire, because they could squeeze through when I first moved them out there. They still act like its a prison though when I let them out in to the yard, unfortunately we are in the city, so they can only free range when we are home to watch them.

Igelwell,

Thanks for the feedback! I was wondering if yours was covered, because here in New England there are plenty of owls and hawks to go around! lol

I am hoping that a 7.5 x 7.5 is big enough (

), and I'd like to have the space to own 8-10 chickens at a time!

Thanks,

mine is covered with a tarp for now, I'd like to switch to corrigated plastic before winter only because the snow is so heavy. Here's a pic...

It has a lot of work left until I'm happy with it, but what better hobby?!?

Your run looks great! Let me ask, how high is it? I found a 4 foot high one, but I'd like to be able to stand up in it? What is your preference???

I wish the run we are looking at was 6 feet... I think 4 feet will be ok though!
