I would like to ask those duck owners who keep their ducks in chain link enclosures whether or not they put their heads through the mesh at all? I have an enclosure for mine but I'm afraid of them getting stuck in the fabric of the chain link. If I have to, I will line the bottom four feet with hardware cloth with smaller mesh.

I would add the hardware cloth. Not only will it keep the ducks from sticking their heads through the chain link, but it will also keep raccoons from reaching through and grabbing your ducks.

yeah, i had two of my foxes get real injured one year and I assumed it was a raccoon reaching in to get their food and the foxes fought back. Until then, I never would have thought to put hardware cloth around the perimeter.
