We're building our coop this summer and I'm curious if anyone else has used chainlink as fencing for thier birds? I know the small critters can get into this but it's stronger and I need strong in our area. I'll be putting hard ware cloth around the bottom and under ground as well to help protect my birds from the predators big and small, but I was mostly wondering if this is a very practicle method of fencing? Anyone, who's used this, please let me know what the ups and downs have been for you?

Lots of us use chainlink. It works real well IF you use a smaller mesh towards the bottom (as you've said you are) and IF it is good quality chainlink to begin with, i.e. heavy gauge and tightly-stretched. I will warn you that cavalier DIY installation, or prefab kennel panels of "discount" quality, typically are NOT strong enough to stop dogs and raccoons. So you need to be critical in evaluating it. But, the RIGHT chainlink works great.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Good to hear others are using chain link...I have been thinking of fencing off a separate area inside my back yard for my chickens, and wanted to surround it in a chain link enclosure for added protection...

Thank you, Pat, for posting this.

I didn't know there were varying grades of chainlink fencing, and I was actually thinking about buying the cheaper kennel panels.

I have a roll of heavy gauge chainlink that my father gave me , and I'll need to buy more, so this is the perfect answer to help me buy the right wire. I won't go cheap, I'll go heavy duty!

It's nice to know that so many others are using this as well. Thank you so much!

A friend of myn buys tons of nice chainlink dog panels of CL used so she can get the nicer quality ones without paying much more for them. Honestly, I think the black metal dog panels are even nicer than the chain link, but not as affordable. Deer or bird netting on the outside stops little birds from getting in.
