I have a RIR who is separted from the flock due to an injury last fall so I know she is laying these eggs. She has always layed brown eggs but since a week ago, her eggs have become very light, like an off white. She seems healthy otherwise. Does anybody know what could be causing the color change?

I should add that she is and has always been on Layer Pellets and was recently moved outdoors after spending the winter inside.

I have heard that the first few eggs after winter can be a different color. Im here learning I will be interested in the rest of the input....

I have an RIR that laid a few lighter colored eggs early on in the spring after her molt. I think it is because they haven't spent enough time in the shell gland. The color is the last part of the egg formation so if the system is moving a little fast they don't get all the color they should.

Is there any chance she's been exposed to longer periods of light? Maybe a longer day might make this happen, I don't really know it's just a guess.

I don't know the real reason, but it happens from time to time. Some of my chickens will lay a lighter than usual egg and sometimes a darker than usual egg.... have you changed her food??

A friend of mine started getting eggs that were almost purple out of her RIR this spring. She always got a brown egg, but now they are purpleish/maroon. it was weird- and there was no change in diet. We thought maybe it had something to do with age?

She hasn't had any changes in feed and layed all winter while in the house. She's been getting a little more light because I've been leaving a heat lamp on with her at night since she was used to being inside and I didn't want her to get cold. Since she went outside, she didn't lay for a few days but then started laying these "white" eggs. Glad to know that color change doesn't mean she's sick.
