We designed and built our coop several years ago for our guineas, and I think it worked really well for them . Now that we've moved out the guineas (to another farm) I'm trying to figure out how to use the structure for in-coming layers (Barred Rocks and Silver Laced Wyandottes). I think I have a plan for adding the nest boxes, but I'm wondering about the floor.

The floor is a dirt floor that has been cleaned out thoroughly. The floor has remained dry throughout the years. I'm thinking of putting down a thick layer of gravel to build up the height, then a layer of roofing paper (because I have some) then a layer of sand to level it.

Here's my question: On top of the sand, would it be better to put in concrete squares or would plywood be better. If plywood, should it be painted? I plan to use either pine shavings or hay as bedding (I have llamas so hay is already available)?

Thanks in advance for advice,

I would think just straight sand would work out great. I dont know if i would lay the roofing paper thought. it might be nice down the road if it starts to stick to spray it with a light mix of bleach water. but even a dirt floor is fine. people raise chickens all the time in old barns with dirt floors.
