How often do you guys change you sand in your hutches? I sift it and clean out the poop once a week but do you remove the sand?

Can I put compost in instead of sand that way I can dump it right back in my compost bin with the kitchen scraps and garden waste.

I use the same sand over and over again and just add some and sift out the droppings. I have my sand in a tray for dust bathing though, is yours covering the bottom of the coop?

I answered the other post that linked this one. I don’t change my sand, just sift and top it off, I do put DE in when I add more.

I have sand in the inside area but I haven’t realy had to add more they can’t kick out a lot of it so I just sift it and throw in compost.

I use a small rake to gather the sand, then I use a trowel to scoop it into a wire sifter thing. I’ve heard people use kitty litter scoops.

What do you guys think about compost in hutch then I don’t have too sift it just dump back in with my compost bin

I give a scoop of mostly finished compost occasionally so they can scratch for bugs. (If that’s not what you’re asking I apologize!) when they’re done with it I put it in the active compost bin. Their used sand goes into a bed that I’m building because I’m on clay soil. The chickens till it in. Should be ready to go by spring, then I’ll probably just go to sifting
