Hello,

I am going to be living in the Northeast and was wondering which of these breeds fits my situation more. I want a good laying breed whose offspring will make for good meat birds. They must be docile, somewhat calm, and survive winters with good production. They will be pastured so they should also be good foragers. And I know both breeds fit this description for the most part I just want peoples opinions who have had experience with one/both of these breeds. Thanks in advance

I have no experience with either breed, though i am researching on cold hardy chickens too since mine ofte got frostbite in the past.

I'm writng what people around me have said: winter can kill a chicken by frostbite to its comb. The smaller the comb, the better the bird will fare against cold winter months. The Chantecler has a flat comb where the Delaware has a single comb; the small cushion comb is resistant against the cold; the single comb is more prone to frostbite. Because of that alone, I would choose the Chantecler over the Delaware, as it has a comb better fit to take on sub zero temperatures and come out unscathed.
