I was in a quandry over nest material. Out of desperation, I just crumpled up wide strips torn from newspaper. It works great! No mess from getting tossed out, the chickens are fine with it, it does not stain the eggs, it is free, easily replaceable, it cushions the eggs, the hens still can move it around until they are content. I like free!

That's great! And they have something to read while waiting for the egg!

I would rather my chickens sit on shavings and you can not get any cheaper then a giant bag of shavings for 5.99 there som compressed that it's funny. . One bag lasts a long time and my chickens are not siting on ink. What's good for some is not always goof for another. I tried the news paper, it was to messy for me . I'm glad you are doing fine with it, it's always great when one finds something that works for them :)

I use shavings and straw... If you dont have a place to store the straw it can be a mess.... I have not thought of using the newspaper in strips... I like the idea:) I have a friend that uses the shredded paper from her office to pad her nest boxes. she lays a solid sheet of paper on the bottom and then just fills with the shreds... She loves it and says its super easy to clean!!!!
