I just bought my first incubator. Temperature seems good, but when do I check the humidity? Once a day? What exactly should the percentage be?

What brand incubator do you have? Does it have the digital factory installed temperature and humidity sensors?
What kind of eggs are you incubating?

You might like to read this article. Lots of great info!

A Hatchmate. Digital temp and I put a hygrometer inside. Silkie eggs.

I have no idea what that is. I'll read the article.

There are plenty of sites on the net on.hiw to calibrate your thermometers and hygrometers.
Basically you will need a medicine cap full of table salt, level with top of cap, an air tight storage bag or jar. Place enough water, drop wise on the cap of salt, do not make a slurry, just enough drops to wet the salt. Place the cap of moisten salt and the hygrometer in the air tight container. Leave for at least 8 hours to stabilize. After the time period check to see if it's teading 75% RH. If it reads low or high you can adjust the amount it is off, either low or high and be able to determine the correct amount of humidity that is in the incubator.
Example: hygrometer reads 72%RH after 8 hours. It is 3% low. So if it's in your incubator and is reading 45%RH, in actuality, it is reading 48% RH, when adding in the 3% for the monitors inaccuracies.
