We are hatching our first ever eggs in the incubator right now and our first chick hatched yesterday morning. He was just now fully dry and we have 6 others hatched out into the incubator, one egg with a beak out and chick on the way and 5 unhatched eggs, I had checked him a half hour before and he was okay, sleeping but breathing fine and he wandered around the incubator yesterday fine as well, then I go in to check and he wasn’t breathing or moving... we broke seal and took him out (everyone else is fine, we were so quick the temp didn’t chance and the humidity didn’t go down even 2%) and we can’t figure out what happened to him or why he died? Did we do something wrong? Temp was possibly too highly at between 100.5 f and 102f but I’ve now turned it down to 95f and humidy holds between 55-70... both vent plugs open and the room temp outside the incubator is 75-80 degrees. ***PICS OF DECEASED CHICK TO FOLLOW*** Please help us figure out what happened! It was horrible to lose one after he was dry and everything and we thought he was okay. We are newbies and we feel so bad We even did mouth to beak cpr and everything, I feel like I failed him.

It happens, there might not have been enough nutrients in the egg or maybe it did overheat. When hatching chicks you are supposed to expect a few losses. When I first got chicks I was told I would probably loose some, it's common to loose chicks especially when incubating them. Sorry for your loss :hugs

Thank you for your kind words!! I have a tendency to become overly attached to animals lol so this was rough for me. It was made worse by the fact that this chick was my favorite :( but I do know that it happens. I lost another one that dried out too fast before getting all the way out of the egg but it was laying on its hatch opening so I didn’t even know it had started to hatch... the other chicks had rolled it. I also “saved” a shrink wrapped chick and am hoping she can pull through. She is my last left in the incubator. I have three other eggs that didn’t pip. I am hoping she survives but have such a sadness is my heart that the one pictured above did not :(
