Yes, a cardboard box is much less conspicuous. I'd try to go a bit larger than the heat plate. That way they can get out from under it if they want to be a little cooler. Definitely use a don't ask, don't tell policy at the hotel. You might try using a luggage cart to bring in your suitcases, and the chick box. It will look more normal wheeling everything in at once.
