Chick grit. So many questions.

I just bought some chick grit for my 3 week and 4 week old chicks.

Do I need to feed it to them for a few days before I give them some treats?
How much do I give them and should I mix it in their feed or a separate dish?
Can they eat too much?
I was thinking about giving them a watermelon rind for them to peck at, do they need the grit for this?

I just make grit available all the time, that way if they need some they can eat it. I keep it in a seperate dish, they like to get in it and scratch around too. I think they will consume grit as needed and self regulate it.
