Chick Grit

I bought chick grit(tiny small granite sand). My chicks are 5 weeks old. Should I keep sprinkling it on their food as I have been for weeks, or can I now leave it out for them free choice?

Hi there, I'm new at this and someone else might have a different answer ... I pretty much stopped mixing the grit into their food at about 5 weeks old. I leave it out for them free choice. I also sprinkle some around their run and in their fenced-in grassy area for them to pick at.

My chicks are just shy of 5 weeks old. When I moved them out to the coop from the brooder box, I started putting their grit in a pan so they could just go peck through it if they wanted it. Last week, I bought a bag of play sand for them to dust bathe in. Yeah. Although they do bathe in the dish of sand, they actually do more eating of it.

Free choice is fine now. Sprinkling some around the area as MyBlackHen suggests is a good idea as well!
