Nothing new here, but wanted to post pics to see if anyone has any suggestions. Chick hatched overnight with no assistance, but was dragging quite a lot of egg gunk. After spending the night in the incubator, this is what is left. I have been trying to keep it moist and push it back in, but it will not go in the way it has for other chicks I have hatched.

The chick seems healthy, has had a small pee, and pecks and food. It seems to be progressing as normal, with the exception of the wound.

Wondering because my attempts to get it back in have failed, if I should just let nature take its course. Will/can it dry up externally and be fine?

This is the naval correct? If so do NOT try to push it back in. The little budge has to absorb back in on its own and the brown nubby part will fall off. Trying to push it back in will only hurt your chick. It looks like it is healing up just fine. Have you ever seen a human newborns umbilical cord or any other newborn animals umbilical? They look like a little brown nub much like as pictured and require time.

Thank you! This is so helpful, and must be why previous methods have not been successful. It has seemed to be painful to the chick to try, so I haven't done much. I will leave it be, and monitor. Better to let it dry than keep it moist?

You could just leave it be if you wanted. I always put a dab of original neosporin on them to prevent infection.
