Video of behavior
Hello group,
We have a chick born about 1.5 weeks ago. She was born with what looks like a scab on her head. Recent changes include holding her head at an angle/sideways when standing still.
She was born the last of the chicks, and was having difficulty eating/drinking yesterday, with a history of holding her head sideways for the past 3 days. We brought her inside, and administer water via dropper, and helped feed her. Today she is eating, and drinking on her own.
We don’t know if she is holding her head sideways when standing still because of the “scab,” or if this is neurological? Every now and again she will shake her head, as if something is bothering her.
When eating/drinking, she is able to hold her head normally.
Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips for how to help her?
The chicks have been on electrolyte water from day 1.
We are unsure of her breed as as she is a rescue. Dad is also a rescue Rooster. (Though I can provide pictures of both, if helpful.)
Thank you
ETA: No other chicks are displaying this behavior, however one male chick did not make it. He had a failure to thrive right off the bat.
They are being fed Organic chicken feed from our feed store.
Electrolytes in water from day one.
Intent would be to try to treat at home if possible, but if she need to see a vet, we can get her to a vet.
We do not know the cause of the scab on her head. She hatched with it already on her head.
Known injury would be what looks like the scab. I will post pictures as soon as my phone behaves and allows me to upload the photos.
She is the smallest of the chicks.
Only given electrolyte water, and brought her inside.
Chick was living outside with mom in a coop that has straw, and bedding. She is now indoors on a towel, with her feed and water.
