I have some chicks that are hatching today and about 10 of them have legs that are stretched back and they cant walk. Has anyone else seen this in quail chicks before and can give me some info on what causes this or what to do about it? thanks alot

I think this is a genetic problem because all the birds with this problem come from the same breeder and I have eggs from 3 different breeders but I thought id ask just to be sure there wasnt something I could do to prevent this. Thanks alot for the links.

wow great post and answers w/ links.,i raise button quail and every year i buy eggs from across the states and incubate them saving a few chicks for myself and selling off the rest .sometimes ill get a few of the ones where they are hatching but cant get out of the egg, of those eggs i have have come to understand not to help them because when i first started hatching eggs i did help them out of their shell and they had bad legs the other chicks will pick on them and their legs so they have to be seprated and then they still died.I used to keep a note pad on the eggs i bought ,from whom, how many ,how much i paid, how many where broke or had dings, how many hatched, lived ,died, colors.now that im thinking back be it old eggs ,humidity or the post office playing toss with them. i can only really know if they are my own birds eggs so i can cross out old eggs and post office and its down to the just incubator and the birds genes.i can tell you some egg stories ..geeeze..like when i bought some eggs and she sent them off priority mail and had a tracking number ...22 days later i got them from both ends we called looking for those eggs and the po couldnt tell me where they where and they just finaly showed up..too late for the eggs though..a sad day for me.good seller bad PO. then there are the bad sellers.the ones that not only ship you old eggs but dinged eggs and i highlight their name .i dont buy from again or recommend eggs from people if i think they are selling a egg count and will send people eggs that are old or have dings that look like they might have been shipped like that.one seller i paid a good price for eggs and the seller sent me 3 xtra. when i got them they were in a carton in a stuffed box and 4 eggs had dings, from the 12 other eggs 1 hatched and died a week later.though i didnt highlight his name not to buy from again,i still havent bought eggs from him because i have to wonder about it and there are to many other people out there that sell eggs to choice from.like i just bought 50 from a gal and not one was broke,or dinged getting to me,shes very nice and those eggs will hatch this friday. im looking for a happy hatch

Is grip rite like shelf liner thats what I used the first 2 weeks in my rubbermaid brooder at the end of the second week I switched to pine shavings I also used it in my bator from lockdown until they finnished hatching

Thanks alot for the info. I also have a list of people I bought eggs from and I also have my quail chicks marked so I know where they come from and when they are grown Ill be able to tell who really has those jumbo birds they claim to have.
