How many chicks are usually lost? We really only want three, but the minimum here is 6.

TIA.

Just get the six and take care of them... then put the ones you don't want on Craigs List or find a BYCer close by who might want them.

I originally only wanted 3 too. But then I relized the minimuim was 6. And now I am too attached to get rid of them!

I highly recommend the beginner chicken math class. It starts with wanting three, but there's a minimum of six, so I get 8 just in case a few are roos, to gurantee my 3 being pullets. Then thinking to double my opportunity i add in a safety buffer of two more, for ten. Since three is a prime number and ten is not I increase ten to the nearest prime number that isn't a double number (11, 22, 33...) so I get 13.

All kidding aside, get the six, and like Mahonri said, and sell your extras to someone on craigslist or give them away to someone who wants them.

Good luck.

I only got 2. Now I wish I had gotten at least 4 but then if they hung out in pairs and one died that would leave one lonely so I need an odd number, 5, but what happens if 1 or 2 end up being boys despite the pullet label on the bin. Dang then I need at least 7 but I'd be safer with 9. The limit in town is 3 hens but most people get away with more if they keep their neighbors happy and their girls cleaned up. I dread going back to the feed store for more feed for the girls. I know i'll be bringing home friends.

so true! i started with six, went back for two more, got ten more, sold a couple, got six more, gave one away, bought a few more...i'm fortunate to have the space and time (and a fellow chicken hoarder boyfriend) to accompany me on my chicken run (haha)...and so i guess that immediately disqualifies me from ever giving anyone advice regarding how many chickens to get.
