Last night when we got home after the fireworks, one of our hens was making a huge racket. We new right away something was wrong. MY DH and DS went to check it out. They could find nothing wrong, it looked as if everyone was accounted for, but they went ahead and set a trap. This am the trap had been tripped, but nothing in it. My DS found my favorite EE chick with a wing missing. OMG, it is so horrible and I am so upset. I put polysporin on it, as that was all I had. It seems to be ok otherwise, it is walking around and ran when my ds tried to catch it. He said it was lying in the nesting box with two others when he saw it, and that they wasn't picking on it. So should I leave it with it's mother or take it out? What else should I do for it? I do see a piece of bone sticking out. I just don't know what else to do for it. I think I saw somewhere on here before that they can live just fine without one wing, but not sure. Someone please help.

I have a white crested black polish hen with missing most of 1 of her wings, and I have had her for 4 years now. she does just fine. I treated her with antibiotics and she healed up fine. even grew some feathers back so it is not so noticeable. she is very sweet and doing great.

Should I do anything for the bone that is protruding out? Or leave it alone? I feel so sorry for it. I hope I catch that darn coon tonight. He will meet the wrong end of my shotgun.

you could post a picture and maybe that would help. I don't know if you can pull the skin over the bone?? bones petruding could leave you open to more infection. I don't know if you can remove the rest of the bone. a picture would help, maybe there are people out there with more experience. my hen had her wing chewed off by something, and I don't think there was much of the bone out, no poking out pieces at least.
