Hello! I hatched out my first round of chicks and was surprised by the colouring and hoping someone can help me understand what may be going on. I have what’s supposed to be a pure blue australorp roo and black EE hens that lay blue/green eggs and have fluffy cheeks and a pure crème crested legbar that lays blue eggs. I got four chicks, two are black splotchy and two are blue. I assume the blacks are from the EE but confused about whos the blues are? Also any way to tell their sex at this stage? Thank you very much

In reality, all of the chicks could come from either the Legbar or the EEs. Except for one. B on the comb I can see that one of the blues has an EE parent. Also, I think one of the blacks, maybe, it’s hard to tell. No Legbar could have pea combed offspring. But I can’t guarantee that the single combed offspring came from the Legbar since EEs can carry the single-comb gene.
Either way, all chicks would be black, blue, or barred or blue barred.
The blue Australorp is black based with one blue gene, meaning no matter what he is crossed with, the chicks will be mostly black or blue, depending on if he passes the blue gene or not.

Since the Legbar passes the barring gene to her sons only, any chicks with head spots would be cockerels. But since you don’t have her isolated from the EEs we can’t guarantee the nonbarred chicks are pullets.
