I laughed at my dh when he made a tiny little perch for our 3 day old chicks. I'm not laughing anymore. At a week old they are fighting for their favorite spot. One chick even sleeps on the perch!

That's cute, wish I could get mine to roost too, it's so cute when they do! I have dowels in their brooder but havn't yet seen them on them. Saw them sitting on top of their one feeder! Thanks for sharing the pics!!

I think dowels are too slick for them. I use an apple tree branch about 1 - 1 1/4" in diam. a few inches off the ground.

Then added a 2 x 4 when they got to be about 3 wks old.

They loved the 2 x 4 over the branch because I'm assuming they didn't have to grip anything. They would snuggle down over their feet like big chicks.

We use saplings from around the property, nailed to other saplings leaned against the side of the coop, and nailed at the top. They love it, and the various sizes of the saplings allow (I think) an easier grip.

I built a perch for my little ones when they were about a week old and they have been using it ever since! I even had to make another one last night because my 4 week olds took up all the space and the little ones had didn’t have enough room. Now everybody is happy! I made mine out of 2X4's for the top and sides then a 1X8 on the bottom for stability.

when i took car of my aunt's chicks, we put a shoe box in there (and filled it with shavings because it was a wire floor) and the 3 chicks always triend to roost on the PARER THIN edge!!!!
