My child let the dog into the room with my week-old chicks. I was in there, fortunately, but he snatched a chick out of the brooder before I could stop him. He dropped it immediately, and the chick ran away and hid under a chair, but she has a cut on her leg now. I caught her, cleaned the cut well with saline solution and dressed it with antibiotic ointment and a bandage. She can definitely walk, and I've seen her eat a little, but I haven't seen her drink. She isn't interacting much with the other chicks and is hiding out under the electric hen, mostly dozing, sometimes picking at the bedding a little. Seems like she's in shock. My question: how long do I let her leave her alone before I force her to drink something? How long before I change her dressing? I'm watching her closely to see that the other chicks don't pick on her, but I have a set-up to separate her as well if necessary.

Welcome To BYC

Sorry about your chick.

When you get a chance, photos of the injury may help.
If you have poultry vitamins like Poultry Nutri-Drench, I would give her 2-3 drops direct dose twice a day to give her a boost. She may be in shock for a little while, but hopefully she will perk up. It's possible that she may have suffered more damage since dogs tend to squeeze (they can't help it, that's just what dogs do).

If you are dressing the leg, then I would change that at least once a day or more if it's getting soiled. Wounds usually heal more quickly without covering, but sometimes it's necessary.
