So, I'm sure these are all things covered before, and I've bet I've read about them, but I can't find those old posts and thought this would be 10x times easier. Just hatched 3 little chicks yesterday, and either all three are pooping green or one is and the rest just can't poop. One chick was in such a hurry to hatch it broke off from it's yolk before it got to absorb, and the yolk flopped on the incubator floor (gross

). He's got a sore on his tummy where I guess the umbilicle cord broke off? And he's been super tired. I've tried to get him to drink, all of them, but they don't get it yet, and I've only seen one eat. They're all still pretty tuckered out. What do you guys think?

And more to the point- got some pretty bad pasty butt. It's pretty dried up. Warm wash cloth can't get it off or anything.

Well soak their butt only under running warm water and clean that butt! Just dry and fluff with a paper towel. Otherwise, they will poop green until they start eating starter. The green poo is from using their yolk. That also means they may not need to eat until that's gone. I usually leave them in the bator for 24 hrs after hatching. Then when you put them in the brooder they should want to drink right away, dip each beak and wait for them to look up and swallow, but not necessarily eat right away. If they aren't eating by day 3 then you have a problem. I put some starter in the coffee grinder and make it pretty powdery for the 1st week. Also start them on paper towels and sprinkle food around on the towels.
