So one of our 3 new baby chicks seems to fall asleep more than the other two, and her head always droops forward and rest sideways in a strange kind of way. I'm just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about. She wakes up quickly to stimuli and seems perfectly alert while not asleep. Also, their box is in an unheated but closed garage with a heat lamp about 14" above the surface. Is this a safe environment in... say 43˚F weather?

The sleeping habit doesn't sound abnormal. I have had chicks sleep laying on their back!

Garage is workable if the temp under the bulb at chick level is 90-95 degrees. If your chicks are one week or less.

Small chicks sleep in all sorts of funny ways. If she is normal otherwise, I wouldn't worry. Sometimes they look like little dead things lying there!

Ah... yes. DH and I call that "guillotine neck"!
