Hi all,

I had a chick that pipped in the middle of the night last night (so around day 22) and didn't make any progress at all by 5pm today. So I assisted it out, he was in very rough shape and I honestly thought he wouldn't make it. He is still alive and is trying to move around a lot more. But his back of his head and neck is quite swollen. I should also mention that he doesn't quite finished absorbing the yolk but it would appear that has starting to solve itself with his rest time.

My main questions are - do you think the swelling will resolve itself? I'm guessing it is from being stuck in the egg. Is there something I can do to help it along? Or do you think it is wry neck? None of my other chicks from the batch had wry neck, but one other one had a swollen neck that has gone down now.

Do you think sugar water, vitamin water, etc, would help at all? And do you think I would be able to wait until the morning to try giving him vitamin water (because the pharmacy is closed)? I can make up sugar water no problem, I'm just worried but I don't know if I should give him something now or give him more time.

He is in the incubator all by himself, should I put another chick from the brooder in there for company, or should he just be alone?

I have him in a long container so he isn't on the wire. Should I put him in a tall container that is maybe more helpful in keeping his head up? He tries to stay on his belly and lift his head up but it is almost as if it is too heavy for him and he goes onto his back again.

I recognize this may be a lost cause but he seems to have so much fight in him. He was so tired by the time I unzipped him, part of me thinks he just needs more time but I'm not sure.

Any thoughts would be wonderful! Thank you all!

Can you please send a picture. I'm trying to get someone to help you.

It is hard to see the swelling at the back of his neck because his feathers have fluffed up a bit. He can hold his head up for a bit, he then looks like a new born baby and his head wobbles, and then he gets tired and puts it back down. He seems to have too much control of his head for it to be wry neck to me. But maybe he needs sugar water? He was yelling at me the whole time I took these too...he is gaining some strength from before.
