chick with bloody spot....HELP!

My brand new fluffy babies are home and happy in their box. I noticed one had some poo stuck to it, not on it's bottom but more towards the underside... I used a damp cotton ball to wipe it off and now there is a red kinda blood spot. I know she is still pooing ok because she crapped all over my hand while I was cleaning her up.

She is running with her peeps and eating and drinking fine. Should I be worried? Did the poo just irradiate her skin or is this indicative of a large issue? All guidance is appreciated!

I would keep an eye on her to make sure she keeps acting normal and also so that the other chicks don't start pecking at the blood spot.

Are they on medicated feed?

yes, medicated feed. She seems happy enough. I am just new and don't want to mess this up. Also this is the chicken that my classroom kids "adopted" and named (Carlos) so if any thing happens to her I'll be in big trouble.

Look up the chicken poo chart on line. Don't have the link. My chicks had a red, blood looking goo in their poo, kinda mucus like. I looked at the poo chart and realized that chickens shed the lining of their stomachs, even at that little age and that is what it was. Now it could be different if what you saw was pure runny blood...from what I have read and been told.

If the chick has a small wound it would probably be a good idea to put a little ointment on it. If you happen to have Neosporin (or the generic, triple antibiotic) that would be good. Don't use anything topical on a chicen that has a "caine" drug in it, like cetacaine, benzocaine, etc. Or some A&D or even vaseline in a pinch. If it's right next to the vent then it will help prevent poop from sticking to the skin.

You also need to watch for the others pecking the injury, as they can be attracted to the blood and turn a minor injury into a much larger one. You may have to remove the chick from the others until it heals up. Many people like to jeep BluKote around because it is an antiseptic for wounds and also turns them purple which masks the blood.
