Hello. I am Joe, and this is my very first post on the site, despite being a reader for over a year. I am a scottish forigner living in mexico and in my first year of BYC keeping. I apologise for the lack of introduction and promise i will get to it soon complete with photos of the girls and roo.

I have found so much good information here where i struggle anywhere else, and likewise many of my google searches produce BYC as the top hit, this is my other reason for not joining sooner, up until this point i was satisfied with all the information i found here from the problems of others, a big thanks for that!

I have a poor little adopted chick around 2 months old who has a leg problem, i have made this post in a hurry and being my first i copied and pasted the questions i found in"before you post" and answered them to try making things as easy as possible.

I appologise in advance for the bad photography, neither of us are great at the best of times, and we were trying to be as gentil as possible (it is sensitive to touch but otherwise left alone to sit, the chick seems happy and asking for food, when i put my hand near it thinks automatically its food, when petted on head/neck chatters normally like most young ones.

I hope not but i am sure i have missed some vital information, but eagerly await any response/help that anyone can offer and be sure to reply

Kind Regards and thanks!

p.s i will try my best to take some better photos

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
RIR cross, around a couple of months old, average weight to my knowledge maybe slightly thin but no loss of apetite
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Unable to walk more than a few steps, the bad leg coming down on the good foot, and unable to lift the good one to take the next step as a result
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
2 or 3 days has been in the house in isolation, closer inspection last night i noticed the bone appears out of place/broken or severely swollen (i am hoping the former)
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
N/A
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
see photos small "cut" looks to be external
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
The bird was a stray which i took in a little over a month ago and had until recently had in quarentine every chance it is a rooster (not the first unfortunately that is a problem here) there is a large door in the chicken coup which was open for cleaning (usually latched) which could have fallen on the chick or attacked by another bird but we heard nothing and neither seem likely.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
normal eating, chick starter feed plus too many treats due to feeling bad for the poor thing
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
slightly runny but drinks more water inside.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Back in isolation in the house
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I am intent on gathering all the information available and hoping it is a dislocation that maybe someone can advise me the best way to "relocate". I am a scottish forigner living in mexico, this is my first year with birds, i am in no way qualified but unfortunatly in mexico animals are colateral nothing more. That is not so for my partner and i, and while we are not able to find a vet that doesnt laugh at a chicken, we are fully intent on doing everything we can for the bird, and i guess if i have to i will cull it, although it would be pretty traumatic for me, i am a vegetarian animal lpver and it kind of goes against the grain.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
This is my first post and hopefully it will arrive complete with photos which i do have.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
In the chicken run dried grass added weekly also in the coup, in the house in quarentine, Cardboard boxes with anything soft for a while until covered in erm 💩 rags etc

Hmm, I'm not really sure about relocating it, but you can google 'chicken sling' and make one out of a towel and a hamper or box to keep him upright and legs down without having all that weight on his legs and allowing him to eat, drink and rest in comfort.

Someone with more knowledge will for sure come along to help!! So sorry for your little, sending my love and prayers for a speedy recovery!!

Thanks for your quick response :)

i have seen various chicken slings and will now rethink and research again that idea, i didnt think it was relevant if there was a broken/out of place bone that may need attention.

He is standing in front of me at the moment (if it is a he) the weight is on his good leg and the wing on the bad side out for balance. He is not in pain that i can tell and talks to me as normal, but squeaks in pain when i move the upper leg (not the lower) also as in the bad photos there appears to be a femur? bone higher than the other when looking from the back

I am working on better photos currently, it may take some time, as i want to cause minimal pain

thanks again, greetings from mexico!

Anytime!! Again, I'm not expert, but I'm thinking if you can relieve any weight on the bad leg (with the sling) until someone can come along with better advice, greetings from the U.S.!!
