Hi everyone,

I have a two-day old NHR chick which has toes, on one foot, which bend at an angle from around the middle of the toe. She's very chirpy, socialising with the other chicks, and eating and drinking well. She's also very active, but stumbles around everywhere.

I think that her leg might be fine, and just the toes/foot is the problem.

Any Ideas?

While she is still small, you can try making a little cardboard "shoe" to correct the problem. You spread her toes out so they are in the correct position, then use medical tape -- one that will hold them in place but not stick so much that it will harm her to remove it -- and tape her toes to a piece of cardboard that you've cut to fit under her foot, like the sole of a shoe.

Despite this approach, recommended by many, one of my Cochin Bantams still has curled toes. However, I wonder from the photos if your girl might also need some leg bracing?

Hope others weigh in, and hoping for the best for her!

Thanks for the reply!

I've read about all this, but been holding off taping her toes because it's the first time I've come across this. You could also be right about a leg brace too - I'm not sure at the moment.

If anyone needs to see the leg from a different angle, I'll post other pics.
