I was outside watching my chickens and noticed that this little girls’s beak is not looking right. When I picked her up it looks like it’s peeling off in layers and her top beak is missing a piece and is shorter than the bottom. She is a Black Copper Maran and is only 21 weeks old. They all are eating a layer feed and get a small amount of scratch at night to get everyone back into their coop/run. I’ve never had this happen before. Is this a sign something else is wrong? Vitamin deficient? How do I fix this?!? I feel so bad for this little girl!

Are you feeding a good quality protein feed. I feed 18% all year round. What about oyster shell on the side. Is she laying yet.

ETA: Was her beak trimmed?

Is she being bullied or running into some wire fencing or hardware cloth? Are you feeding a balance chicken feed? It should grow back normal. In some cases when a beak is broken, an empty tea bag can be used with SuperGlue gel to repair the beak. I would spend some time with her to see what is going on. If necessary, confine her to a crate with food and water to give her a rest, if she is being bullied or chased.

We have oyster shell available and are feeding her the Nutrena Layer pellets. We don’t trim their beaks but it looks like hers is. I’m wondering if it broke?

I don’t think she’s getting bullied but am going to double check now. We don’t have wire fencing but she could have gotten it stuck in the hardwire cloth that is secured to the frame of their run.
