Chicken beginner with a few questions

I don't know where you are in MD, but Moyer's in Quakertown, Bucks County, PA sells 17 week old pullets. They only sell leghorns & Sex Linked brown layers, but I got some one year In November & had an egg the next week! If they are too far from you to pick up, I do know a lot of feed stores & such get them in sometimes in a lot of states, so you would have to ask around. I think if you search Moyer's Chicks you will find their website.

Thank you for the heads up, I found some 12 week old pullets today nearby so I'm good to go! I will keep Moyer's in mind for future purchases.

I brought the pullets home today. Got them from the same breeder, 3 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Black Australorps.

Have another question, I have straw in the coop but it is hard to see the droppings. Any tips for cleaning the droppings w/out ripping all the straw out? They are spending a lot of time in there so of course they're *going* in there a lot.

Get a bale of wood shavings and just keep it stirred up every few days, after a 4-6 months replace all the shavings.
Look into a poop board/roost board, that will make the shavings last much longer.
