I have a mixed group of hens that I have had for a year now that have been together since day 1. They all have seemed to get a long just fine with no problems. I have a jersey black giant rooster who like any other rooster loves to mate. I think he has been getting pretty aggressive with his ladies because several are now having bare backs with broken feathers. I have checked several over for mites or lice and havnt seen anything and no bugs are present. I have been watching their behaviors as well and they dont seem to be picking on each other. I have ordered some "chicken saddles" to help out their backs before a blood bath happens. Waiting on them to come in the mail. The rooster seems pretty aggressive but he does such a great job at finding food for them and protecting them from predators. They follow him around like a king. None of them seem to be afraid of him but 1 hen. Thats my biggest concern. She is a Ancona hen who has always been afraid of everything. She is always scared of everyone. When I take food out or treats she stands in the back and lets everyone else eat. She doesnt push her way in and eat. She easily gets scared off. Even when I throw worms in there they seem to freak her out. This past week has gotten worse. She barely leaves the coop now. She either just stays on the roost or lays on the ground of the coop. When she lays eggs they are pretty much breaking as soon as she lays them. I know which ones are hers because she is our only white egg layer. She will eat if I put the food in the coop but if I force her to come out she will run and hide. I have been putting oyster shells and extra protein food in there with her to help her out. The rooster seems to like her the best because she is the only one that seems to submit to him but he seems to mate with her like 3 times within 5 minutes. She doesnt get a break so which is why I think she has been staying in the coop. As soon as her feet hit the ground he is there waiting on her. Its like he senses her. He has 12 other hens so he has plenty to go around with. I have him in an isolation area of our yard today to give the hens a break from him and hoping Annie (the Ancona hen) will be brave and come out and eat again. Any suggestions of what to do to help her fear of everything?
