Hi, I am new here, my name is Alissa. I just encountered a problem with one of my chickens and I would really like for someone to help me out with what to do. I found her in the coop breathing kind of funny. I believe she has a respiratory problem as she opens her beak for air and I can hear a gurgling sound when she breaths. I tried giving her VetRx and that is when I noticed the gurgling sounds. She can't stand and has here feet a bit curled and stiff. Her feet go to the back of her. Her eyes seem big. She is not doing great at all. At first, she just seemed agitated but now you can tell she struggles to breath. She is definitely struggling to breath, anything I can do, I feel like time is ticking. Help! What do I do?

I'm sorry your baby is not well.
Did you look in her mouth to see if there is anything stuck in her throat? Has she been eating / drinking normally until this started? Is she pooping normally?
Can you separate her, possibly put her in a dog crate, to keep her calm and quiet and away from others so you can keep an eye on her? A bathroom would work as well. Put a towel down so she doesn't slip on the floor.
At this point, don't bathe her as it would stress her out and could send her over the edge.
I'm not sure what else to suggest, perhaps others with more experience will be here soon.

Thanks for you response but unfortunately she passed that same day in my arms around 6:30pm. The weird part is that some sort of fluid came out of her beak and her eyes. It was a foamy fluid which I don't understand why. I find it strange that she died in a couple hours, too. I would like to know what caused her death but sadly she has passed. Thanks though.

It sounds like she may have aspirated on fluids. Chickens do not have a gag reflex.
Can you remember what her crop felt like?

This is all just a guess, without a necropsy there's no way to know for sure what caused her decline.

Thanks, I don't remember how her crop felt but I believe it felt a bit squishy but flat. I was trying to give her VetRx but it could have gone down her airway, which I hope not.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Holding a dying chicken, while difficult for us, I believe in some way is comforting to the bird. They don't die alone in the corner of the run or among their flock, which is traumatic for all. May you find comfort in knowing you tried what you could. :hugs

No, I don't think so.
It sounds like she was already in a bad way.
I'm glad you were able to be with her.

Thank you, I hope I didn't kill her though.
