Hi all,
My beautiful healthy girl is very suddenly breathing loudly and hiccuping? She was fine this afternoon. Layed an egg eating and drinking, looks great . Then she all of a sudden started noisily inhaling n exhaling. More on inhalation . And like squealing with hiccups.
I suringed a couple cc of olive oil n massaged her crop ( which is soft) . Tipped her upside down per internet advise. Her wattle turned very red but no change in status. She is now quarantined in the garage. She had some old bread before this started but not sure what is going on?. The rest of the flock is fine

Have you check her throat ?
Is he's gargling ?
Is that bread is too old , moldy or devloped fungi?

Never go with internet advise of upside down motion can kill a bird in a second with aspiration of liquids

Is she's sneezing during hiccups ?

It could be stridor, which is caused by an obstruction in the airway. Sometimes it could be a bit of feed or something caught and will resolve itself. Other times it could have another cause like a respiratory infection. Check inside the mouth and throat (what you can see) for anything obvious. I have an older hen that will do this when she's overheated in the summer and it stops once she's cooled off. I would keep an eye on her for awhile.

No it was just hiccups. I took a video. But couldnt post it. The advice about turning her upside down was from a thread on this forum:( the guy ended up taking the chicken to the vet n had a big bill with xrays, meds extra. I'm not sure the hen even made it. I'm not gonna go that route .
But she is absolutely fine this am ! Mayb she just wanted a massage to her crop n some alone me time in the garage away from her sisters!
It was scary but I think she must have had some bread caught in her throat.
Thanks 4 ur help
