Hi, I have very recently become a new owner to a mixed flock of 5 hens. 2 brown layers,I silkie cross, 1 cuckoo maroon,1 wells summer. The 2 brown layers come with a few back feathers missing, why? Also these 2 brown hens seem to chase the other hens,"especially the Silkie"Is this normal? Will it settle?
I feel sorry for the other hens. Sorry so many questions. Any advice much appreciated 🐔😁

Well the pecking order is natural. But if they're being too aggressive it might be a problem. Some hens are just plain evil. For me, my nicest hen is the top of the pecking order, somehow, and now I don't have a problem with bullying.

Did they all come from the same flock?
How big is your coop and run, in feet by feet?
Dimensions and pics would help immensely here.

Hi, yes all same flock. My coop has 6 nest boxes this is where they go at night. Then out in run during day. The run is 14ft by 6ft. I have attached photos with a picture of the brown layers back feathers missing. Maybe she was bullied previously 🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks

Kinda small for 5 birds.
If they are sleeping in the nests, then you may be getting poppy eggs.
Better if they sleep on roosts.

Maybe she was bullied previously
...or mated by an overzealous cock/erel....or she may just have brittle feathers.
How long have you had these birds?
Where did you get them and how old are they?

Oh, and, pardon my lack of manners....Welcome To BYC! @Colyardchick
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
