So I am building a new walk in coop because I want to expand my flock, and right now I use a droppings board under their roost and I wipe it every day but I feel like that waste so many paper towels, so I'm building a little drawer/shelf under the new roost to make like a litter box but on line it says use horse stall sand and some say to use building sand. So the question is what type of sand do I use?🙂

Funny, I'd swear I just replied to this but my reply isn't there.

I used deep bedding and just clean it all out into the compost every 6-12 weeks.

I didn't use droppings boards, just tossed a handful of scratch into the bedding once or twice a week so the chickens would stir it up and used the manure fork to break up any crusting under the roost when necessary.

Did it smell bad, also ill be walking on it idk if that makes a difference.

Properly-managed deep litter is odor-free. If you have an odor you either need more dry "brown" litter or better aeration.

Anyone walking in any chicken run should keep a pair of shoes reserved for the purpose. It's impossible to avoid all the land mines.

horse stall sand
Sweet PDZ?
That's what I use...thin layer(<1/4") that get completely sifted every day.
