I had an old chicken coop and I fixed it up, painted, replaced boards etc.... It is about 4 feet tall and I was wondering if I could use it as a quail coop? I heard from someone that you can't use tall chicken coops for quail, because they will fly up, hit the roof and then break their necks. Does anyone know if this is true? I had a quail coop that was about 2 1/2 feet tall and I had no problem. I just got 15 quail today. (I finally got around to replacing my quail after an opossum raid and I want use the chicken coop that has been placed on patio bricks. So no more opossum problems.) I am not quite sure if I want to risk putting them in a tall enclosure and losing some. Thank you.

Quail in the wild are relatively ground birds; they don't fly unless provoked by danger. You shouldn't use the tall coop with a small area as an enclosure for quail. Though they fly high, they have a possibility of injuring themselves, and also they don't roost as chickens do. I would suggest putting the enclosure on its side and see how they like it. You could also clip their wings, so they don't injure themselves as well. A good rule of thumb is to not use vertical pens for ground birds. I hope this helps. :)
