Hi everyone! I am a newbie flock owner. Got my 6 girls around Memorial Day & they just went into their big girl coop last night. I have a ladder going from the elevated coop to enclosed run. How long might it take them to use it? Any tips to encourage them?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! There is no way to say for sure how long it will take them to get used to it. Especially as they ha e only just gone in their new big girl coop. You could out some food or trays on the ladder so they will more willing to check out out. When I've moved chicks out it has usually only taken a few days for them to get used to the ramp but then again others have taken longer before they have ventured up and down it. I'm sure with a bit encouragement they will soon be using it.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC!

x2 on @Yorkshire coop 's comments. We sprinkled a bit of feed on the girl's ladder when they were new to it. All it took was 1 curious, hungry girl to find the food. Once she started using the ladder, the rest quickly followed suit.

Good luck with your flock and thanks for joining us!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

The best way I've found to encourage my hens to use ladders is just simply putting them on the roost and letting them get down themselves. Once they see that it's safe and fun, they do it all by themselves.

Thanks for the advice. They all mastered the ladder this morning. Put them to bed in the coop last night. Found them all in the run late morning :)

Got them going down the ladder. Now working on going up. Does it help to put them almost at the top so they climb up into the coop hole in the floor?
