Hello everyone. I'm new in the chicken forum but figured like every other forum it's a great place for ideas, answers and suggestions. I'm building a 5' x 6' Chicken coop, one 6' long wall is 6' tall and the other 6' long wall is 5'f tall. I want ideas as to where the nesting boxes should be, inside the coop or hanging off the back? My original plan was to have the 6' tall wall be the front with a small chicken door entering out to the chicken run, a couple windows on that wall as well. I've seen some folks build nesting boxes right about the chicken door. On the side wall it's 5' long with a tapered roof, that will have a door big enough for me too go inside the coop. I'm toying with the idea of maybe having the 6' tall wall as the back wall and building the nesting boxes so the hang off that wall and the 5' would be the front with windows and a chicken door, still leaving the big door on the tapered height wall. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you put the nest box on the out side you will have more room in the coop and you can get the eggs from the out side and don't poo all over your shoes.

I think I'm going to put them on the outside. I like the idea of having more room inside. Thanks for the help.

I use plastic lidded storage bins and a covered plastic kitty litter box for nestboxes. The plastic is easy to clean and doesn't have any crevices for mites to hide in. When I want to clean out the bedding and replace with fresh, all I need to do is pick up the box, take it over to the composter and dump it out. I can hose off the boxes and leave them out in the sun to dry, too.

When I had broody hens, the moveable nestboxes made management very easy. I just picked up the box with the hen and her eggs inside and moved the box where I wanted to put the broody, separate from the flock.

I just set the boxes on the floor of the coop, with one on top of the storage chest (that's the one the hens prefer).
