Hi all, unfortunately when I looked closely at one of our Blue Cochins this morning I saw that she had a large bump or wart on her upper beak. It's fairly large but I have no idea what it is or how to treat it. Does anybody else? Thank you, she is mama chicken to the rest of the flock. She is always protective and has kept to herself, no changes in behavior.

Writing this to boost the post! I wish i could help, good luck :(
Thank you, I am going to put some antiseptic on there tomorrow and keep an eye on her. Since she is not acting weird, I am mostly concerned about an infection. So I'm hoping it is something that if I keep it clean it will clear up. 🙏

Many members frequently report lesion development on the proximal aspect of the upper mandible. The causes can vary by case, but virus, injury, nasal blockage, infection, early neoplasia development are plausible guesses. An inflammatory response in the cells can occur when frequent rubbing is occurring on the skin, most commonly, that can be due to sticking their beaks through hardware cloth to get grass/treats, or pecking through metal feeders.

Narrowing down which one of those it might be, is hard without cytological examination, but as basic treatment, you can continue on applying an antiseptic to the area, in case of injury, which apparently tends to be common. Neosporin or an antiseptic such as chlorhexidine are good as they have long residual antibacterial activity. A thorough look over your setup for any predisposing factors (such as the ones mentioned above) would also be a precautious measure.

Thank you very much for all of this great info! I think you are right that she probably hurt herself pecking through hardware mesh. So far so good with the Neosporin, it isn't getting any bigger and looks like it is becoming crustier like a big scab that is healing
