Chicken Died

JJ Yes, I lost 6 chicks all nh reds within the first 4 weeks. They just started acting week, then couldn't stand, then died. The guy who sold them to me asked a bunch of questions and said he thought it was "bad stock". They were on pine chips and I did my best to do all that I was told. I lost no black sex links just 6 of the nh reds. I have two chickens that are still incredibly small, one black sex link and one nh red. They are half the size of the others , but seem healthy. I had my cousin kill one chicken a nh red because it went down and couldn't walk and I thought maybe it was mareks. It tried to walk, but it couldn't. The next day my little black sex link was looking lame, but I let it live because I had read on some other sights that maybe I had been too hasty. It's still alive and well although it limps and lays down alot, but it eats just fine and gets around pretty well. I hope this helps. I so appreciate all the help and ideas.

California Ducken. I'll check again and see if I find anything in regards to mites. I haven't started feeding grit yet, should I start that before they get on crumbles? Thanks.

Oh her crop just is limp and kinda dry. Not plump and full like the others. Although, some of them don't really have their crops yet.

Just reading through and I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of your troubles. It can be so frustrating and disheartening. I have no suggestions, just a shout out of support and I feel for you.

Hmmmm. How often are you feeding them or do you have a feeder available at all times?
Do you give them any treats? What kind?
About the grit, don't give them any if they are only on chick starter.
Boil her an egg and get some protein in her. Also, add some vitamins to the water, or if you can get some poly vi sol (no iron) yes infant vitamins.
All chicks and chickens should have a fat little bulge on their chest most of the day and flat when they get up in the AM. You may need to get more food in her if it's Limp? and dry?
Is the skin stretched out on her chest and hanging?

They should all have crops that are noticeably full from almost day one. This would indicate they are not eating enough. Or are you perhaps talking about her comb?

That's OK, we all do it, makes for a good chuckle.

That's the trouble with talking this way, a tiny slip can get out of hand real quick.

Good luck to you.
