Hi,

I incubated 6 eggs, and 5 hatched on Day 21 (this past Fri) with first external pips at 2am to last hatched by 10:30pm. Three eggs were from my Buff hen (all Orpington), and the last one left is a Buff. While the other hatchlings were dried and fluffy, this one still had veins visible. It pipped internally yesterday afternoon at 4:30, and today, day 24, it is still alive at 7:49 pm and peeped when I picked it up to candle it. I can feel it moving inside and I told it to come out already.

What is the deal? It seems like this one is doing everything in the right order but just really slow. The Buff eggs and chicks are bigger than others, and the chicks seem to be really squeezed in there compared to the smaller eggs from the other hens (still Orpingtons so still big). I hatched a clutch from these same chickens a month ago and all 7 hatched, with one going from external pip to fully hatched in only an hour! I just want to know what to expect? Is it going to hatch at any moment? How can it still breathe after all this time?

Any similar experiences? I'm not going to interfere, but I welcome your experiences with assisted hatch of late eggs and non-intervention of late eggs. Thank you

@Debbie292d had an egg go long earlier this year. I think she had started her Debbie's Silkies thread and it's chronicled there.
I did. It was three days after the rest all hatched if I recall. I was pretty frustrated but then shocked when it just hatched on its own.

Well this morning is Day 25 and it peeped when I candled it. I can see it's beak clearly and it looks like it's chewing so I suppose it may still be absorbing it's yolk. Maybe it'll hatch today? I'm encouraged that you've had a late success before.
