Chicken eggs too big?

My delight at finding my first, very small, chicken egg was shattered when a co-worker told me that her chickens sometimes lay great big eggs and that this kills them. Is this true? How can it be avoided? Are some breeds more prone to this than others? Really don't want to lose any of my girls. Thanks.

Its called egg bound and I have several chickens and havent had this problem yet. If you have a hen acting funny just post on here and people will tell you what it sounds like and how to check............ Relax, dont let her panic you.
