Ok need some advice. New to chickens and they are testing my knowledge. Planning on heading down to TSC or Farmland to pick something up...
I noticed yesterday one of my girls is not opening her eye all the time. I took a close look and it kinda looked like she had something in her eye...but i think its just her 3rd eyelid. in any case she will wipe it on her back. If there is swelling it is very very minor at this point. it might not be swollen.
I am leaning towards a scratch or peck on her eye area.
No bubbles in the corner no discharge that is not clear at least.
I saw nothing that looks like an eye worm either...
I have put non pain reliever antibiotic (generic neosporin) on it last night and this morning but she wipes that off quick. still eating and drinking and getting treats. not noticing any more sneezing then is normal which is once in a blue moon and not necessarily her.
So wondering how to treat her?
also what should I have on hand for chicken booboos? I would like to not have to go into town to get treatments for the basic stuff all the time.

That picture doesn't look like a clear picture of a nictitating membrane, so I would wonder if she hasn't suffered an injury to the eye or the membane. Many farm stores sell Terramycin eye ointment, and a vet could prescribe an even stronger antibiotic drop or ointment. I have used plain neosporin in chicken's eyes for an eye injury before as well. Good coop ventilation, and avoiding dust and mold can help to prevent eye problems, but pecking is one of those things hard to prevent. I hope it heals.

Well I went to TSC! Was tired of not having stuff on hand so I put together a little chicken first aid kit so to say. got some Vetericyn Eye Wash, VetRx, Terramycin, Poultry Nutri-Drench. I already had some corid. Is there anything else i should get for this kit?

I plan to flush out her eye then apply terramycin. if I see no improvement in 3 days I am calling my aunt again who has a friend she will call. I am also going to go watch chicken TV and monitor if she is being picked on since her eye is bugging her. If so I will separate her, but i had no noticed anyone picking on her as of yet. also watch for any worsening or new symptoms and if need be quarantine her but I think this is just something that got in her eye or an eye wound from the pecking order.

I seem to be having a rough time with chicken health the last few week... Is it often that one of the ladies has some issue? or do most people go long stretches with no problems?

It's smooth sailing mostly, then all of a sudden there's a problem that needs attention. It's best to nip it in the bud right away.
Liberally flush your hens eye with saline solution, then apply the terramycin ointment. Not much ointment is needed, just a little. Apply twice a day as necessary. No need to flush the eye but once with the saline solution.

Flush it correctly this time with the help of my husband.. I hope we flushed it enough...she was not thrilled.
Then applied the Terramycin...I am sure she now thinks I am a monster...Held her for a few min so she couldn't wipe it off right away,
While I attempted to convince her I was her friend.

She is my Danish Brown Leghorn, and has just started to squat and put her wings out when I touch her back.
She needs to stay healthy and give me lots of eggs!

Right after cleaning her eye this evening.

Ok so it's been a few days her eye looks a bit better open much more often. I think it.s a peck wound to her inner eyelid ... it almost looks like it got cut... or it's maybe a grown on it.

???? Any thoughts. She is not getting picked on out there any more and maybe less then some of the others, is not the first or last to get treats and they share the treats just fine. There are no other symptoms aside from the eye ... she is wiping her eye off less then she was.

I took updated photos with a better camera.

her good eye>>>

It might be scar tissue, not sure. That's good news that she's not wiping her eye as much, perhaps she is getting accustomed to it. I would continue with the terramycin or neosporin ointment treatment. Perhaps in time it will shrink down and eventually get back to normal.
