Hi everyone,

Our chickens got out of their run and my dog grabbed one of them. I was able to get there quickly and free her.

I believe she is in shock. Very slow movement and mostly just sitting in one place. I have moved her in the house, gave electrolyte water and some food.

But i notice some injury to the eye. Not sure if its an injury or just a result of shock. Attaching few pictures here.

Overall situation has improved over last hr or so. She is more active. But i am still bit worried about the eyes.

Can anyone advise on this?

Thank you,

That left eye does look injured. I'd rinse it out with saline or an eye wash and apply some terramycin eye ointment if you have it or plain (no pain relief) neosporin. Not much you can do about eye injuries other than keep them clean and wait for them to heal on her own. If the injury is mostly to her eyelid she should make a full recovery, but if it looks like eyeball itself has been punctured she'll probably lose sight in that eye.

Thank you.

I have applied vetericyn opthalmic gel. I will also get terramycin ointment.

Assuming injury to the eye lid, how long do such injuries take to heal?

Really depends on the injury. A torn or scratched eyelid can scab over pretty quickly and be healed in a couple weeks. Deeper or more traumatic injuries can take longer.

It's hard to see what happened to the eye in the picture... Have you been able to open the eyelid and see that the eyeball is okay? Given the dog attack I'd be worried it was a puncture wound that could have injured the eyeball and also increases the risk of infection.

The Vetericyn eye gel is good to use if you don't have Terramycin.
You'll still want to work on getting her eyes open, you can use saline or Vetericyn to flush/clean out the eye so you can remove any debris or pus. Ideally, you can to put some of the gel or ointment into the eye once you have cleaned it.
I prefer ointment, this way you can apply some to the outer tissue around the eyes as well.
Looks like she may have some facial injury on the right side under the beak towards her face or is that just some dried blood?

Work on hydration, get her drinking. Hold a cup up to her beak and see if she will drink on her own, if not, then syringe or tube fluids into her.

Look her over for any other wounds. Dogs shake their victims too, so she may have suffered trauma from that giving some extra vitamins that contain E and B1(Thiamine) can also be beneficial.

Let us know how she gets along.
