Hi, Everyone, I am super new. We just purchased lumber and supplies to build our first coop. I saw a number of posts that recommended that we build before we get chics - Everything takes twice as long! My brother will help me do the construction. We were originally going to help our neighbors with a coop, but they decided that with two small children, they weren't quite ready. Since we are empty-nesters we picked up the Coop Mantle. We plan to build this summer and then purchase 4-6 chics for a brooder in the early spring. I just purchased and am eager to get into Damerow's (4th Ed) Story's Guide to Raising Chickens. We have about an acre of land, surrounded by forest in an urban area, so chicken security is a big part of the plan. Initially I am thinking about Heritage chickens, but we are just at the beginning of our investigation of which kind of chicken to raise, mainly for eggs. I look forward to learning from the Chicken community here. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve and welcome to BYC! :frow I think it is a good idea to do the building and planning prior to ordering chicks, but I never follow that rule myself. Coop design is almost breed specific my game types like trees and high places. The Silkies huddle on the ground. Zero in on what type of breed you want and for what environment and purpose would be my advice, also with a mind twoards what predators they might face. Here is the livestock conservancy's pick-a-chick pdf................Best wishes!
