Hi All, I am new to the Chicken Family and started with Chickens Dec 2014, I currently have 14 "Potch Koekoek" , 3 "Black Australorp" , 14 "Bosvelder" and 1 "Rhode Island Red and ofcourse 4 little white chicks that I have no idea what the breed is. Learnt the very hard way and lost all of my first flock except this one Rhode Island Red. Will be getting 15 Rhode Islands end June :-) Can't wait. I love animals, love crafts and gardening, but my chicks seem to have put all other hobbies at a distance. LOL :-) I work full time for a clearing and forwarding Company, but hope to someday get to a point where I can rather do my second job permanent. I found out about BYC by accident one day googling about chickens as I would like to know as much as possible. This has really been the place to find everything, so glad I joined! I will be attending a training course soon on Poultry Production. Feel very excited and can't wait. Thank you to all the post and information, I have learnt more about chickens in the last couple of weeks from BYC, making me realize I am at the right place. Will post some pictures (as soon as I figure everything out) of all my chicks. Look forward to all your comments. :-) Have a super Chicken Fever day!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You have a nice mix of breeds. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. I'll look forward to seeing your pics. :o)

Welcome to Backyard Chickens- we have many members from South Africa, I would think there is an existing thread for that. You might want to put "South African thread," in the search box and see what comes up. Then you may find others living near you also with chickens.

Hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm very sorry to hear of your losses!

I hope the other RIRs arrive safe and sound in June!

It sounds like you are kept busy with your working and hobbies!
